Two of our employees, Sara and Veronika, have this week attended a two-day course in HYDRUS in Prague. HYDRUS is a software tool for modeling water flow and contaminant transport in porous media.

We are glad to announce that Facilia has been awarded the contract for the project CONNECT (Connecting the Network of Networks for Enhanced Communication and Training). The project will facilitate the development of a web-based platform which will enable members of the IAEA to access technical learning material and take part of training courses online.
The CONNECT project is hosted by the IAEA and is being funded by the EuropeAid department at the European Commission, with aims to facilitate the distribution of knowledge in the fields of radioactive waste management.

Facilia hosted a regional IAEA training course on advanced safety assessment and dose calculation tool. Members from India, Kazakhstan, Cuba, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Slovenia, Tajikistan, Ukraine and Uzbekistan attended the workshop.

Facilia has signed a framework agreement with the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency (Naturvårdsverket). The agreement will facilitate future collaborations in the fields of risk and safety assessments of environmental hazards.

Between September and December, five students from Ukraine will visit Facilia on a fellowship from the IAEA. During their stay they will study management and disposal of radioactive waste.

During the last week of August Facilia hosted their annual Facilia Workshop, this time in Ljubljana, Slovenia. On the agenda were presentations of current projects, planning for the work of 2011-2012 and also a field trip to the Krško Nuclear Power plant.
Apart from the Facilia staff, representatives from Intera, Continental, SKB, Posiva, Vattenfall, SSM, Crossland Consulting, CMSET Ecomonitor and the Facilia board also attended the workshop.

We at Facilia welcome our latest addition to the staff: Veronika Raguž. Veronika has been with us since the spring of 2011 when she wrote her Master’s thesis here at Facilia. She now holds a MSc in Physical geography and quaternary geology, and specializes in hydrology, hydrogeology and water resources.

The date for this years Ecolego Workshop has been set to the 10th-14th of October.
For those of you who have attended this course before, the setup is as usual:
We start off with a two day crash course in Ecolego basics. After that follows a two day presentation of new exciting features both in Ecolego 5 and in the upcoming new release: Ecolego 6. On Friday we finish the week of with a seminar where the participants are welcome to present their current work in Ecolego and discuss solutions to problems.

In the beginning of April it was time for the next Facilia adventure: six of us went to visit the Äspö laboratory in Oskarshamn.
The Äspö Hard Rock Laboratory (HRL) is a unique research facility for geological disposal where SKB performs a series of experiments at a depth of 500 metres together with Swedish and international experts.

On the 24th of March the Facilia crew went on a field trip to visit the Forsmark SFR plant. SFR is a final repository for short-lived radioactive waste and is located in Östhammar north of Stockholm. The group was taken for a tour in the repository, located 50 meters underground.

In October members of the Facilia staff will attend a workshop in Dneprodzerzhinsk, Ukraine. The purpose of the workshop is to start phase II of the project "Assessment of Risks to Human Health and the Environment from Uranium Tailings in Ukraine" (ENSURE II). The overall goal with the project is to conduct a safety assessment and to propose the most effective remediation option for the contaminated areas that the inhabitants of Dneprodzerzhinsk have inherited from uranium milling during the time of the Soviet Union.
